Drupal 11 (D11) project update

Great news for the project - we’ve released the D11-beta version of the distribution. It’s now available for local development and testing. The D11 distribution is on track to be released at the end of this year. The plan is to release the distribution with Drupal Core 11.2.x. In January 2026 after the security assessment, it will officially launch and be available on the platform. And the automated upgrades scheduled for February to April 2026.

Summary of key milestones:

  • November – release D11 distribution (4.0.0)
  • November-December – Complete the Security Assessment
  • December - Drupal Core 10.4.x in end of life
  • January – Officially launch the D11 distribution
  • February – April – undertake the automated upgrades
  • June 2026 - Important Drupal 10 is End of Life

Join us for the final D11 session for the year

At this year’s online Mega Meetup week we’ll have the final D11 information session for 2025. Make sure you join Monday 2-3pm 10 November 2025. We’ll be covering what to expect in the automated upgrades next February.

 Key changes coming in D11

New modules being added to the distribution:

  • Book module
The book module is being removed from Drupal Core. The contributed module equivalent will be added to the distribution.
  • Better Exposed Filters (BEF) Module
The BEF module enhances users experience when searching to provide more filtering options. It is required by Facets module moving forward in Drupal 11.
  • Session Limit Module
This module is being added as a security enhancement for GovCMS. It limits the number of login sessions to one browser on one device.
  • Search API Spellcheck module
This module is being added as a functionality enhancement for GovCMS. It works in conjunction with a Search API backend to supports spellchecking, e.g. “Did you mean …”
  • Views Data Export Module
This module is being added as a functionality enhancement for GovCMS. It's used to export data from any View into various formats (eg CSV, XML, JSON, XLSX).

On the front-foot

The best way you can prepare for the D11 upgrade is to review your website and remove legacy technical debt. To help you identify which deprecated modules affect your website, we’re excited to share with you a new module audit task available from the GovCMS Dashboard(Opens in a new tab/window). You can review the full list of modules and instructions on how to use the audit tool in the D11 readiness Knowledge Base article(Opens in a new tab/window).
