Drupal 7 to Drupal 9 - the clock is ticking!

Tuesday 12 July 2022

The clock is ticking! Only 4 months left until Drupal 7 (D7) retires from the GovCMS distribution. We urge all of the D7 community to make the move to Drupal 9 (D9) before November 2022. If you are unsure of where to start, or stuck in the development phase, get in touch as soon as possible.

The move from D7 to D9 is a big process and involves a full website rebuild on D9. This means changes will need to be made to the hosting platform and a new project will need to be set up for your migrated site to use. If you need a helping hand to start this process, please get in touch, so we can walk you through the process and changes required.

If you are a SaaS D7 customer and can’t move your website to D9 by November 2022, you will be moved to a PaaS hosting. This will mean associated PaaS costs will also be passed on to your agency. It will also mean your team will need to put in more effort to maintain your site. If you don't maintain a PaaS site properly it may expose your site to potential security risks and jeopardise the stability of your website. Sites hosted on the PaaS platform are responsible for their own security patching and updates. This can take time and requires specialist skills. If you make the move to D9 before November 2022, this will ensure you stay on the SaaS hosting platform, meaning the team here at GovCMS will do your security maintenance and updates for you.

Need support from a developer? GovCMS recently established the Whole of Government Drupal Services Panel. There are currently 17 suppliers on this panel with the necessary skills and expertise to help you rebuild and move your D7 website to D9.

The team at GovCMS are ready to support you. Get in touch to discuss your plans or if you need help getting started.
